Mourinho’s post-match interview has, typically, gathered a lot of attention. But I do think it touches upon a really interesting topic: which team was the best?

LFC undoubtedly controlled the ball & controlled most of the space. But the four biggest chances belonged to Spurs.
LFC’s biggest chance was a 12pc shot from Salah.

Spurs had two Bergwijn opportunities, Son’s goal & Kane’s header.

Shot based xG clearly favours Spurs, but non-shot favours LFC even more so.
Spurs did surrender most of the space on the pitch, but LFC also controlled Spurs’ counterattacks really well. The chances above stick out, but if we consider the LFC counterpress, second ball success, key interceptions etc., there’s a good case for LFC being the dominant side.
Shot volume, possession, final third/penalty area passes are generally indicative of gameflow, but they don’t tell the full story. Likewise, Spurs conceding a number of 0.1xG shots on the face of it sounds ok, but it’s a dangerous game against xG over performers, like Salah/Mané.
Because Spurs surrendered space, their performance is being dismissed, but it was a good performance. They can’t play toe-to-toe - even City at their best couldn’t at Anfield. Tactically, they played it pretty well. It’s risky playing without the ball, but it nearly came off!
