I’ve been thinking about this a lot all day & debating whether or not to post

Doctors & media appearances: be it TV, radio, newspapers, SoMe

As the VP of the @IHCA_IE I am privileged to have a platform where my views are requested

I think carefully each time I am (1)
(2) asked about the value of my speaking on a topic

I ask myself first: am I the right person or is there some one more suitable?

Often it’s easy: I’m in a representative capacity & speaking for that reason

Sometimes it’s trickier & when I think there is someone more
(3) appropriate I suggest that person

The other questions I ask myself: is this contribution to public understanding & confidence? Is it constructive? If the answer is no to either: I say thanks and no
(4) when I’m speaking in a representative capacity but the topic is outside my area of expertise: I contact multiple consultants at the top of their game in that specialty so that when I go out, the information I share is factual, evidence based & constructive
(5) As doctors our opinions are given a lot of weight & air time

With that privilege

Comes a responsibility to be as accurate as possible

To be constructive

After all:

Primum non nocere

So I find it very vexing when my own crowd let the side down, & spread woo
(6) it’s unethical & it has to be called out

Specialists on vaccination are; ID, Micro, General Practice, Public Health

If you aren’t already following them, I’ll list some of the people I trust for COVID-19 specific info below
(8) with privileges come responsibilities

We aren’t through this by a long way

Roll out of the vaccination program will need dialogue, sharing of evidenced based info, people will appropriately have questions that will need transparent accurate answers
