This is also a larger issue w/ how race and relationships are presented in Sci-Fi and other genre shows over the last 10 to 15 years. Black men having white girlfriends / wives was a trope thrown in to make the show 'edgy' but the writer's discomfort was always obvious
In Heroes, as Leonard points out, the show runners clearly didn't want to have anything to do with portraying a functional IR when it was a black man and a white woman. The same phenomenon was going on with ANOTHER popular genre show at the time, the 4400
On that show you had Richard ( Mahershala Ali)
and Lily Tyler, who had a daughter together but the show made it VERY clear that they hadn't had sex, and the birth was the result of alien's mixing their DNA. Because BM / WF sex, even as a married couple was too taboo
However the show writers of 4400 had NO such concerns when it came to Richard and Lily's daughter, who was a highly sexual superhuman black woman who was literally obsessed with her white male boyfriend. The Hollywood "discomfort" Leonard writes about only goes in one direction
Hollywood's faux woke racism played out in Nip/Tuck, Scandal, and now a slew of commercials. Interracial relationships with white men and ANY WOC are fine. Black men and White Women? Still mostly relegated to comedy, the background or 'a very special episode" 👀
