In defence of Raheem Sterling

A thread
History
Obviously no player should be getting picked or get a free pass for what they’ve achieved in past seasons, but this helps illustrate how good a servant Sterling has been to the club. We signed Sterling for £44m up front, rising to £49m, from Liverpool in 2015. (1/11)
In his first two seasons he flattered to deceive, scoring 21 goals and assisting 26 in 94 games; decent numbers but inconsistent performances. He had performances like the double against Gladbach and the late winner against Arsenal, but didn’t look like a £50m player yet. (2/11)
After a season of working with Guardiola and, crucially, Arteta, Sterling exploded in 17/18. 46 games, 23 goals, 13 assists. He formed a lethal combination with Leroy Sané, as the pair combined to create countless tap in goals for one another. His best City season imo. (3/11)
In 18/19, Sané’s limited time on the pitch decreased Sterling’s overall game a little, yet he was still able to grab 25 goals and 14 assists in 51 games. The 6-0 win over Chelsea, when he absolutely ruined Azpiliceuta, and that dreaded defeat to Spurs were his best games. (4/11)
Last season was Sterling’s worst since 16/17 for City, and yet his goal count still grew - 31 in 52 games, with seven assists as well. He underwent rotten form in the winter, as well as missing that chance against Lyon, yet still ended up 4th in the PL scoring charts. (5/11)
Current form
Sterling is being hounded by the fanbase for his poor form, and rightly so. He was rubbish in our last few games and has missed sitters already. However, he is still our joint top scorer with Ferran Torres, who has supposedly had a much better season. (6/11)
People have lamented Sterling for only scoring in games which have no value and for only scoring tap ins, and not contributing to play well. Sterling’s three league goals this season - the opener against Leeds, winner against Arsenal and opener against Fulham. sTaTpAdDeR. (7/11)
Competition
Fans of Torres, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden question why Sterling repeatedly starts over them. Torres is new to the league and, as good as his output has been so far, it’s noticeable that he doesn’t see the ball for long periods. Sterling is always involved. (8/11)
Mahrez did score a hat trick against Fulham and was MOTM (with AkĂ©) against Leicester. However, these are his only goal contributions in the league. Whilst he’s also an overhated player for us, it’s not exactly been a vintage season for Mahrez either. (9/11)
Foden’s case is probably the most compelling, as he’s been on the bench far too much. However, Pep has handled Foden’s development to this point perfectly imo, so I do trust him to know what’s right for the player. More starts would not go amiss though. (10/11)
Conclusion
Raheem Sterling is one of the best players of the Mansour era and, on his day, one of the best players in the league. He is off form at the moment and probably warrants being dropped, but people need to stop disrespecting everything he’s done for the club. (11/11)
