Lots of debate about equalities & protected characteristics today. My main thought: there's no choice to be made between taking action to dismantle racism, sexism, prejudice against disabled people etc vs action on poverty, place based disadvantage etc...1/4
In people's lives, these things are intertwined. Poverty is much higher among some ethnic minority groups than in the rest of the population. Systemic racism is a key factor locking people in poverty. Disabled people have much higher poverty than non-disabled people...2/4
Loosening the grip of poverty across the country means strengthening weak local economies so people can get good jobs when right now where you live can be a big barrier to that. It also means tackling stereotypes and discrimination that hold back disabled people, mothers...3/4
...and people from some ethnic minority groups. We need to come together to achieve all of those things, living out our values of compassion and justice. And it's important for our whole society and our economy - we all suffer when people are held back from thriving. 4/4
