Sister Mary Kenneth Keller was born #OTD in 1913. She designed Beginner’s All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code — BASIC — with John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz, and was the first woman in the US to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

In fact, she and Irving Tang were the first people to earn a PhD in Computer Science in the US. They received their degrees on the same day: June 7, 1965.
Sister Mary Kenneth Keller obtained masters degrees in Physics and Math from DePaul before going on to study Computer Science at UW Madison.
