Quick thread on Ossoff’s TikTok content: so, you might have seen the video (or not!) where Ossoff said something about the “TikTok family”. And it seems he has a pretty literate TikTok team that’s getting real, organic engagement there. Let me show an example.
For those of you who don’t use the app, in a similar way that meme formats here go viral (how it started/how it’s going), sounds are a big part of TikTok vitality. Someone will post video and suddenly everyone is lip syncing the sound. Here’s a sound that recently went viral:
So you have a ton of people looking at pictures of guys on Hinge who have Obama in it, and then someone does something like “me reminding myself why I’m voting for Biden even though I don’t like him” etc. The other day, the Ossoff team posts this:
The video has, as of now, over 750k views and over 150k favorites, which is really good. And the comments are all like this with a bit of “daddy 😍” too. It’s genuinely pretty clever use of the meme, and it helps that Ossoff’s only 34 so it doesn’t come across as pandering/cringe
I have no idea if this will work or it matters. But the runoffs are about turnout and turning over every rock to find every voter they are. Almost no other politicians besides AOC use TikTok/are literate in it. But it seems like a good way to reach young, low propensity voters.
Ran out of characters: to engage with them where they are, but also in a way that feels as if you understand their language. But that's only a part of it: there's a policy aspect, and it's also about looking authentic too (and Ossoff has other vids that accomplish that as well)
Is TikTok why? Definitely not. But it certainly doesn't *hurt*. And if you remind *one* person to vote who might have otherwise forgotten to vote because you're flooding their feed with well-curated content, that's a win. https://twitter.com/conorsen/status/1339604841547632640
I am learning from twitter that the person in charge of this account is @meghacbhat so congrats to her for creating content that doesn’t pander and knows its audience/platform.
