TV operating systems = new-age cable boxes.

Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Samsung, and their respective OSs are the new endpoint distributors of TV.

Roku's early recognition of this fact gave it a lead in CTV.

Short Thread ⬇️
The Roku OS was purpose-built for TV.

Others adapted mobile OSs for TV. Adapted versions of Andriod are still used by players in the space today.

Why does that matter?
Roku’s OS was designed to use the standard parts that came equipped on TVs, which kept costs low and increased OEMs' margins.

Optimizing for TVs allowed Roku to secure the most partnership with OEMs early on.
Roku OS vs. Andriod

Roku takes care of the costs of updating and developing the OS.

Android, on the other hand, fully licenses its OS to OEMs.

The OEMs are then responsible for updates and the costs associated with them.
Roku’s purpose-built OS allowed it to rapidly improve upon the consumer experience after purchase.

Here is a list of the latest updates.

Roku is the largest player in CTV with over 46M households. Fire TV is a close 2nd.

If we keep with the cable box analogy, this lead will be hard to overcome for new entrants.

Average TV lifespans are 7-8 yrs.

The big players today aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
