Three’s a trend. First there was a freakout on both sides of the political spectrum when Biden nominated Neera. The chief complaint was she said mean things about Republicans. Now there’s the fallout over Jen O’Malley Dillion using colorful language.
Sandwiched between the former and latter was Joseph Epstein’s disparaging opinion piece in WSJ about Dr. Jill Biden. Each controversy had a slightly different wrapper but underneath it was the same old sexism women in power contend with over and over.
For four years women in media and Congress have been verbally abused and harassed - publicly- by the Trump administration, and some Republican members of Congress. Enough. We can’t allow this to go unchecked and just chalk it up to hardball politics.
Part of Biden’s reasoning for appointing so many qualified women, or so I thought, was to change the conversation and tear down the double standard in politics. So we’ve got adapt and stop being scared to offend Republicans for fear of losing votes.
Last thing. I’ve noticed a lot of AOC’s male critics on the left hide behind labels like moderate or centrist to disguise their sexist attacks. It’s perfectly fine to disagree with AOC. But when you’re constantly fishing for tweets to disagree with...
...chances are your disagreement is about something other than politics. It’s about demanding conformity. The kind of demands we don’t usually place on men we disagree with.
