So I’ve had my own issues presenting at or being involved in projects at University of Mississippi - & here’s my (condensed) hot take on what happened w my friend & colleague Garrett Felber:

My guess is the uni & the leadership of the nearly all-white dept thought...👇
That with a white man teaching African American history they were getting a less radical - & far less *radicalizing* - professor than had they hired a Black prof.

When they realized *just how wrong* they had been, they scrambled to find a (legal) excuse to fire him.👇
While I completely support Garrett, I personally do NOT support efforts to boycott speaking at the university.

The overwhelmingly white student body there NEEDS to hear radical speakers.

They desperately NEED to be better educated abt race, class, & social issues.👇
Saying "we refuse to speak there" makes the "Ole Miss" admirations' jobs *that much easier.*

They can continue to teach history, politics, etc in the exact (wrong) manner they always have been.

Garrett was a threat BECAUSE he was speaking & teaching there.👇
Don't end his legacy there.

Expand it.

Amplify it.

Blow the minds of those students.

Change the state of Mississippi.

For the better.
And yes - the fight is long and hard and fucking depressing as hell but that's what civil rights movements ARE.

Call upon your wise ancestors, or decide to make atonements for your forefathers' sins ---- just do whatever you need to do to shore up strength & KEEP FIGHTING.
