As a critic with a degree in Russian, I often get sent books about spies. Something I noticed was how important le Carré was for queer and Black writers who used the spy novel genre to expose the hypocrisy of the West during the Cold War.
Here's one I reviewed earlier this year, Lauren Wilkinson's American Spy: https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/lauren-wilikinson-american-spy-review/
And earlier this month, I reviewed Sometimes You Have To Lie, a biography of Louise Fitzhugh, the author of Harriet the Spy, who was both a queer woman and a leftist working in the immediate aftermath of the Lavender and Red Scares. https://newrepublic.com/article/160468/harriet-spy-louise-fitzhugh-book-review?utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=EB_TNR&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1607377652
