After my bummed out tweet storm yesterday, I did want to say that going from a liberal Protestant seminary to a Jesuit PhD program felt like a cleansing of the soul. Meeting the “baby SJs,” learning, about Dorothy Day and seeing the Catholic Worker in action was transformative. https://twitter.com/madryaeltong/status/1339225440100229120
I was really sour on the Church after seminary, for many of the reasons I detailed in my thread, but I’m telling you. The Jesuits-in-training (I forget the technical term), I swear were some of the nicest, realest, actually-truly-care-about-the-poor dudes.
Add in the people at the Catholic Worker who literally slept on bed bug infested mattresses because if they fumigated the building this would mean closing the soup kitchen for a day—and make people go hungry for a day.
Imagining going from a place where seminary interns excused not challenging their rich parishioners about tax-dodging because “they pay my salary” to a place where people literally woke up with bed bug bites so that someone wouldn’t go hungry for ONE DAY!
