After the #SYPFreelancing panel this week & writing my final invoice of the year I wanted to see how all my freelance work from 2020 split between various jobs. Thought this might be interesting to some new/aspiring freelancers.
43%: Typesetting & odd jobs for regular clients. Small jobs add up!
17%: Metadata cleanup on @consonance_app for Rebellion (thx @DatabaseSponge & @has_many_books!)
15%: Bloody Scotland social media & digital fest
13%: Durham Book Fest social media
12%: Typesetting via Reedsy
So 55% of my income came from typesetting and 45% from social media/digital management and metadata clean up. This is a closer split than I expected! And this is from someone who is looking to move away from quite so many social media jobs...
Reedsy, though the smallest slice, was a great find for random clients who needed typesetting & editorial work. I charge my highest rates there due to fees and it can be a bit hit and miss but worth the time, mostly. (Join via this link for free $$ too! https://reedsy.com/p/jones-laura )
2021 is probably going to be just another rocky year for income since I quit some jobs, though I'm lucky to go into it with a regular gig thanks to Dead Ink. But that only just covers rent so lots of other little typesetting jobs needed to fill it out.
But this is all from the beginning of the year when at one point I had literally zero jobs or income lined up for the forseeable. Then too many jobs. Rollercoaster is an understatement. I have to remind myself to go into 2021 with faith that work will come!
So I'm open for new jobs in the new year if anyone needs any typesetting or publishing consultancy or running some projects (and maybe social media...!)
