Today we published our report into Regional Marine Planning – find it here: http://ow.ly/c24y50CNT6m

Scotland’s seas are among the most diverse and productive. Effective planning is needed to balance competing demands for a thriving marine economy and a healthy environment. 1/8
Marine planning in the UK began with commitments under international agreements and EU legislation.

These aim to ensure a sustainable marine environment, with protected ecosystems, and a fair balance of those demands on resources. Let's explore these a bit more… 🦑

Two laws – the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Marine & Coastal Access Act 2009 – require @scotgov ministers to adopt a 'National Marine Plan' for Scotland’s inshore and offshore waters.

Inshore = less than 12 miles 🎣
Offshore = 12-200 miles 🚢

3/8
The requirements from both 🇬🇧 and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 legislation are addressed in The National Marine Plan 📜

It sets out how Scotland's seas should be managed. It tries to balance competing interests in the use of marine resources and to protect and enhance marine species and habitats.

4/8
As well as planning for the whole of Scotland, there are more local, inshore regions that also need to be managed.

Regional marine planning can be done by 'Marine Planning Partnerships', made up of people and organisations with interests in the marine environment. 👷👩‍✈️👨‍🌾🧜

5/8
These partnerships have the power to develop Regional Marine Plans 📕📗📘

These will take the aims and objectives of the National Marine Plan and apply them at a regional level. This allows local ownership of decisions and planning around specific marine issues.

6/8
A decade on from the Marine (Scotland) Act, no Regional Marine Plans have been approved.

We have been reviewing the marine planning system in Scotland, and today's report explains our concerns about progress made so far and what action needs to be taken.

7/8
There are 11 marine regions around Scotland 🐙🦀🐋🚣

Shetland, Clyde and Orkney are the first to have Marine Planning Partnerships officially in place. But further progress requires leadership from @scotgov and @marinescotland.
