CW: euthanasia
Given draft legislation in Queensland due to be passed in 2020, I wish more Aussies were paying attention to this debate in Canada.
Access to euthanasia is often framed as a progressive (for) vs conservative (against) issue, but that erases very real concerns. https://twitter.com/donplett/status/1339312991322443776

Access to euthanasia is a hugely complex issue, and if you dismiss the concerns with it as simply “pro life” vs “pro choice” you *will* get a bad outcome.
I have had to fight too hard, too constantly, for doctors to manage my pain. I have had to fight too hard for disability supports. I have had to watch too many friends have these fights.
While we have a health and social security system that ignores individuals’ quality of life concerns, we cannot have an ethical euthanasia system.
Does that scare me? Absolutely. Suffering without options and dignified self-determination terrifies me.
That is not a good enough reason to ignore the need to fix palliative care, access to pain management, access to disability supports, and access to liveable pensions.
