Apologies for the rant but the Moore Park debacle struck a nerve.
Public/municipal golf course’s under threat from agenda-minded politicians &/or deep pocketed developers (who tag-team) need more help.
They need more champions for the cause. https://twitter.com/warrensmithfox/status/1338785683473764356

Moore Park received support from @WarrenSmithFOX @mikeclaytongolf @GregChalmersPGA @AdrianLogue @Rod_Morri & other influencers down under.
For the moment it’s safe. Six months from now? A year?
Perhaps not.

Those influencers in Oz along with public golf advocates like @MattGinella @ashbyash @NGF_GolfBizInfo and others here in North America can’t always be on the front lines. They can’t be in every town or city when a beloved muni becomes a convenient target for land acquisition.
Politicians are political. They’re difficult to fight. I know of no situation where a group trying to save a public course wasn’t a decided underdog. Support & guidance is critical.
Where should that come from?
Industry stakeholders.

Support, you see, does not have to be financial. If a town faces the loss of their facility well worded emails, phone calls or videos to a mayor or city councilor have clout.
Those can be extremely influential.

So too is having the most up-to-date data/statistics on the game’s reach, health benefits, environmental green space impact, job creation, tax implications & economic impact available when asked for.
Golf helps golf.
Public golf courses are the grassroots of the game.

They’re the introduction mechanism, the ramp up, the conduit to customers for life. Yet every day it seems we hear of another on the chopping block.
I admit some are operated dreadfully. Many aren’t re-invested in, never see upgrades when required, aren’t staffed properly or

with golf passionate Human Resources. There are circumstances where closure of a facility can be justified.
That was not the case at Moore Park & wasn’t with the city of Thunder Bay, ON this month.
I’ll always advocate for public golf courses because I grew up playing on one

Just as important is advocating for seniors on budgets, families who can’t afford private club membership & kids wanting to learn. Because as @IntegrativeGolf once told me, “when a public golf course closes it’s gone. It’s never coming back.”
Neither do the public golfers
Neither do the public golfers
