1/ I absolutely love #medhistory and find stories like this so interesting...but it also got me thinking about #COVID19 and just healthy air in general....

2/ Here's the article from @patrickcsisson in @CityLab:
"Your Old Radiator Is a #Pandemic-Fighting Weapon:
Turn-of-the-century faith in ventilation to combat disease pushed engineers to design steam heating systems that still overheat apartments today." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-05/the-curious-history-of-steam-heat-and-pandemics

3/ Then, of course it got me thinking of #COVID19 and forced hot air heating systems...and because I live in #Boston...old apartment buildings and multi-family houses... https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.19.345363v1.full
4/ And of course the wonderful work done by aerosol scientists to deepen our understanding of this pathogen transmission mechanism:

And again, I think our focus has to be on optimizing air quality (both indoors and outdoors) to optimize health.

6/ As someone who suffers from both allergies and asthma, I am more aware and sensitive to air quality in my home than most people.
Common things found in homes (particularly older Boston homes) like mold, dust, pet dander, can be health concerns (in addition to lead/asbestos)

7/ I also found today's post from @DrvanTilburg really interesting re indoor use of gas and air quality. #COVID19 https://twitter.com/DrvanTilburg/status/1339027231717400576?s=20
8/ To focus on healthy air quality in this country, is to also acknowledge structural racism, and that there is a significantly higher incidence and burden of asthma in Black, Hispanic and Indigenous communities.

9/ It should not be surprising that the air (and what it carries) we breathe into our bodies can significantly impact our health. But perhaps, one unforeseen result of the #COVID19 pandemic is a re-emphasis on the importance of air quality to human health...
