I see Robin Williams trending and remember three fleeting encounters:

1. S.F., late-1984: My wife, pregnant with our first child, joins some friends for a last night out at Holy City Zoo, the late, great comedy club on Clement St. Robin Williams pops in for a late-night set...
...notices my very pregnant wife in the audience, and proceeds to do a warm and hilarious riff on pregnancy (and her).

2. S.F., late 1986: That child, now a toddler, runs up and down the aisles of Green Apple Books, the wonderful used book store a block over from HCZ....
Slams into a guy browsing the stacks. Guy turns around and smiles at the kid; it's Robin Williams. Kid's dad (me) instantly remembers a bit Williams did imagining fathers as superheroes--"Daddyman," with his all-powerful "No!" Williams instantly goes into the bit right there...
...as the child toddles off (chased again by dad).

3. D.C., date unremembered: Publicist invites me to interview Williams after a show (at DAR Hall, I think). Williams is gracious and eager, but a second publicist waves us off and interview never happens....
Williams actually seemed disappointed it didn't.

The man had serious demons and troubles in his life. Never seemed to get in the way of his kindness to strangers.
