1. So, after a year of dilemma & research re Brexit, against an international socialist background I’ve come to conclusion that Brexit isn’t about British freedom. It’s about swapping European capitalism for US capitalism. So, best way out of this Farage fantasy is Scottish Indy.
2. I always suspected it was. But the arrogance of Remainers in the Blairite media scunnered me. Hence my reluctance to take Blair and Campbell or any other war criminals’ word for fuck all. But what a choice. Between regan/thatcher fantasy asset strip of Uk and war criminals.
3. So, given the choice of being enthralled to Brussels or Washington (because Westminster is a satellite potentially of either) I chose Brussels. England has spoken and so has Scotland. They said different things. What Scotland says makes more sense to me. HOWEVER - I refuse to
4. I refuse to insult those who have chosen differently. I see logic in both cases. The arrogant dismissal of the Brexit Majority by ‘centrists’ was an insult to UK democracy, however much you wish the vote went differently. Scottish democracy voted differently.
5. That too must be recognised. There are lots of reasons for the Uk to stick together. And lots for Scotland to break away. Both sides have strong arguments. Which is why the polls don’t show a conclusive victory for either side. So, I’ll vote for Indy, as I did the last time.
6. As someone who’d prefer socialist Britain to an Indy Scotland it was a big decision in my mind. Starmer’s Labour offers zero hope for social Democracy when its leader prioritises white supremacy votes over decent left of centre votes. That finalised my decision.
7. I won’t insult those who don’t want Indy, which I do. Nor insult those who want Brexit, which I don’t. Both debates are close. Denying folk a right to think differently is not democracy. It’s delegitimising dissent from your view. Low level of debate shows poverty of thought.
8. It’s also dangerous, as any of us who worked in Northern Ireland during The Troubles know. There’s a responsibility on all of us debating Scottish Indy or Brexit to respect opponents rather than delegitimise them. While most of us can’t countenance violence...
9. ...there are those itching for it. All they need to excuse such motivations is intemperate words of those they agree with. It will legitimise in their minds the notion that anything - including violence - has a nod and a wink. So, be passionate. But be careful. Be temperate.
10. Looking at intemperate language on all sides it seems we’ve learned nothing. I have to say the majority of this gunmouth diplomacy is coming from the pro-British side. It’s a hangover perhaps of Empire. A sense of entitlement. But responding in kind doesn’t help. Rise above.
