Re: fan art discussion
I’m gonna break down some of my concept thoughts for making fan skins using my LoL and Spellbreak fan ideas as reference + peppering in process I know from Smite
Here are the designs I’ll be discussing:

And here are my reference boards
Note for the Spellbreak one - I actually flipped between a few boards, including my league refs due to the Japanese oni theming/research I’ve done previously (using @VizRefPro btw - 10/10 program)

When making these concepts, there were a ton of things I had to account for:
- how does the source material break down the general design themes/shapes/etc
- how to approach color to match the theming
- style fits
- more technical stuff: taking rigs/animation/etc into account

- materials/rendering/etc
- making use of repeated shapes/design elements/patterns
And a whole slew of other stuff!
I had to iterate on ideas to help narrow down what fit the goals for these pieces best (I like to Frankenstein ideas together!)

Fun fact - the Diana sketches are from before I started WFH for covid!
For the league designs, I had to ask myself if the silhouette of my design will read in game as the character. I had to weigh color options for Quinn on readability and on matching preexisting ideas. Diana was tough because leona’s skin is more bulky, but Diana is NOT bulky!
For my Spellbreak Oni, I looked at how the team at proletariat approached skin concepts and silhouette reads. I did roughs over a base character and then did some idea sketching. I tried to get ideas on how certain costumes ride rigs + made changes...
...to theoretically shift bones in order to get the pretty parts I thought were bigger priorities
Fan art is really great in my honest opinion for making mock pipelines and working through what professionals are doing on the daily. I don’t know the teams’ pipelines for certain, but from exp on smite + from research, I can make educated guesses and deduce things
It’s great practice: helps teach style matching/cohesive looks/researching, helps teach pipeline and how concept artists need to take 3D/animation/tech/etc into account when designing, etc
I’ve learned so much just by making fan skins for games I love!

Sorry if this is bit scattered. I’m just tossing my thoughts into the void haha
