This iconic sculpture of the great president Abraham Lincoln was the 1st government commission granted to a woman artist, the 18-year-old Vinnie Ream. Ream did the design and the final was sculpted in marble by Italian craftsmen. It stands in the Capitol Rotunda.
This photograph shows Ream with her portrait bust of Abraham Lincoln. The work was from life, with Lincoln modeling for her over a 5 month period in the Capitol basement. The Final work was completed after the President's death.
Ream was subjected to abusive rumors due to her youth, beauty, and her political connections (accused of influencing votes). Her husband decided she should not pursue art after her marriage. She returned to art 20 years later. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Another of Ream's most recognizable institutional sculptures is this iconic portrait of Admiral Farragut in Farragut Square, Washington DC. Farragut is the man who declared, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
