Paul Newman (yes the actor) is/was a legend... time for a thread👇
Newman served in the United States Navy in World War II. Initially, he enrolled in the Navy pilot training, but was dropped when his colorblindness was discovered. He later flew as a turret gunner in an Avenger torpedo bomber.
After the war, Newman completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in drama and economics. He later attended the Yale School of Drama for one year, before moving to New York City to study under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
In his time as an actor he appeared in over 67 films. He was nominated for Academy Awards in five different decades and won the Academy Award for best actor for The Color of Money in 1986. He retired from acting at age 82 stating,
“You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”
Newman was a car racing enthusiast, in 1979 he placed second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He would go on to compete into his 80’s.
But what really makes Paul Newman legendary is his commitment to philanthropy.
Did you know...as co-founder of the CPG brand @NewmansOwnFdn started in 1982 all post tax profits are donated to charity. As of July 2019 over $550MM has been donated.
Upon his death in 2008 an Italian newspaper wrote “Newman was a generous heart, an actor of a dignity and style rare in Hollywood quarters.”
in 2017 his Rolex was auctioned for $17.5MM making it one of the most expensive wrist watched ever sold in an auction.
it’s said Newman was a democrat, a smoker, an ordained minister, a race car driver, among other things.
I believe it’s the collection of passions, hobbies, and dedication to a moral compass that makes Paul Newman truly legendary.
