I'm about to say all this with all due respect to Kevin Steele, who is an excellent defensive coordinator and by all accounts a really good dude who could still be a good head coach
If the answer was going to be Steele, it needed to be Steele on Monday. Better yet, it needed to be after the A&M game, because you could fire Gus, let Steele beat MSU, then promote him off of that win (however lackluster it might have been)
Because that's how you save what's left of an absolutely slim recruiting class. You have a head coach they know, and they know a general direction for the program
It's still odd to hire a 62-year old who was already on the staff of the guy you fired, but you can make it work.
INSTEAD, you fart around until NSD is out the door, the class starts to fall apart, and NOW you try and make the move for the same 62-year old DC with an even worse career record as a head coach than GENE CHIZIK?!
You just made a move to spend $10 million in four installments (forget the 10 Gus gets in 30 days, that's coming from elsewhere). Now is not the time to hire on the cheap
And somehow this starts to get worse because the name that comes up on the offensive side is MIKE FLIPPING BOBO. When every single national champion worth a damn has won with offense, you lean into the dude that still thinks it's 2005?!?!
Pat Dye was an incredible man that built us up from an absolute nadir and showed Auburn how they could build a championship level team no matter what Georgia and Alabama were doing.
Also his time as a head coach passed TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO. Winning with his formula DOES. NOT. WORK. ANYMORE.
but now we have a rich jackass that has decided that since it was his money to fire the old guy, he gets to pick the new guy, and he thinks resetting the clock to 1989 is just going to fix everything.
I'm already disenchanted with this bullmess. I love Auburn. I'll probably still get season tickets just because I love tailgating and I can't stand watching games on TV. But my engagement outside of that would certainly fall of a dadgum cliff
And yet, unless something changes, we're about to head into 4 years of an unwatchable, uninspired mess. But you all got what you wanted, didn't you?
If Mario is off the board, then it's time to reset. You can still nail this hire. But striking out on one viable candidate and dropping to the guy you have standing around with no evidence that he can actually do the job reeks of that four-letter acronym all f***ing over again
