Today's release of @uscensusbureau's hardship data is extremely troubling. Here's what we're seeing & why it's troubling (Thread) 


85.4 million (36%) of adults reported difficulty paying for usual household expenses (such as food, medical bills, rent, bills, & student loans).
That's up 2.9 million from 82.5 million adults (34%) from mid-Nov. & the highest since late August when comparable figures began.

27.4 million (13%) of adults reported not having enough to eat, up from 25.7 million (12%) in mid-Nov. a record high since late August.
That means 1.6 million more people than just the last release —and 5 million more since late August — are struggling to put food on the table.

20% of adult renters -- an estimated 14.3 million -- reported not being caught up on rent, up from 17% in mid-November.
And with the eviction moratorium expiring at the end of the month, millions of people will face even greater housing insecurity right after the holidays.
