I had an interesting exchange with someone with a hammer & sickle in their profile. Millions have died under that emblem - but if someone still feels that is the system for them - then that is their choice. This person felt I should not, as a lawyer, represent people with right
wing views. As a defence lawyer - I represent people with views on the left and right - or with no identifiable political views. My duty is to represent their legal rights and put forward a case in their best interests. Rather like a doctor, their views are of no concern to me.
The idea that lawyers should choose who to act for based on client's views is abhorrent to justice. I have acted for people accused of murder, fraud and violence -it does not mean I sanction murder, or fraud, or violence
Regimes where lawyers are afraid to represent someone unless their client has 'the right beliefs' are bad places. The sorts of places where your door comes off the hinges at 3am and you don't see your family again.
So criticise me - criticise our system - but believe me the alternatives are not good .
