I usually bring small totes filled with food and other items in the car whenever I’m headed anywhere to have on hand to give to the homeless. An easy way to make somebody’s day
I researched the most helpful items to include a while back & figured I’d share for anyone interested in doing the same. Esp now that it’s cold.
You will want to use reusable, sturdy bags (Dollar Tree or Aldi esp has cheap quality totes). You can include water, food that doesn’t expire quickly (applesauce, peanut butter crackers, pretzels, granola bars, etc.), protein drinks, band aids, chapstick, kleenex, etc.
Maxi pads and tampons for women are often overlooked and have been items I always try to include. I’ve had a number of women specifically thank me for those items. So a good one to add
Most of these items can be found at the dollar store. Thick socks are ones u will want to make sure you grab from elsewhere & a huge need. Esp in cold areas. Thick gloves too. Hope this helps! If I have the time, I slip in a card or try to speak briefly while giving it if I can
My boss at a nonprofit I interned at in college used to be homeless for some years & said convo or simply making eye contact & a smile or wave was so appreciated & not often given. It can be instinct to look away if u don’t have something to give, but that helps too
