. @GoodJobsFirst just updated its #Amazon Tracker, a tally of known economic development subsidies provided to the company. So far, we counted more than $3.7 BILLION in public assistance provided to the e-commerce giant. https://www.goodjobsfirst.org/amazon-tracker
Taxpayers have been subsidizing every aspect of Amazon behemoth operations: offices, small and large warehouses, data centers, Whole Foods grocery stores, Zappos warehouses, the company’s movie and TV productions, even a fashion studio in New York City.
Amazon subsidies include local property tax abatements for its warehouses, sales and use tax exemptions on servers and electricity Amazon buys for its data centers, corporate income tax credits for investing or hiring, cash grants, or reimbursements for worker trainings.
The $3.7B is conservative and not complete. Amazon has grown increasingly secretive. It asks govs to sign confidentiality agreements; many projects are filed under its developers, landowner or an LLC . We’re also lacking good quality public disclosure, especially on local level.
So, what should we do? First, state and local governments should stop subsidizing Amazon, which locates close to its affluent customers and next to highways, airports and ports. Subsidies don’t play a decisive role in the company site location decisions. https://arcg.is/0OXrHf
Amazon has been making record profits during the pandemic and doesn't need any aid from the public sector. For this reason, the company should voluntary suspend all its subsidy agreements. State and local governments could redirect that money to help small businesses stay afloat
State and local governments need to improve transparency around all subsidy deals. The data should be easy to find, understand and use. It should include the total extent of all state and local assistance.
We need to be mindful of where we spend our money. When we buy on Amazon, our $$ leave our communities. By spending money at local stores, we ensure that the money circulates longer in our community creating real opportunities for our neighbors.
