i thought a lot a while back about the idea of performing your own personality and i realized that's basically what vtubers are, of course it's a character and there's fantastical backstories and such, but it's clear the general personality is coming from a very genuine place
i started thinking more about this after learning Polka has a more introspective and intimate side in her solo content, as opposed to the popular clips where she's more rambunctious and ditzy and loud. it's not that it's a false image, but it's not her entire being
people are different around crowds and in front of audiences, and getting to see both sides of that coin is really interesting. of course the whole thing is a performance; the purpose is entertainment, but that doesn't make it ingenuine at all, her character is true to herself
like this is from her debut,
and this is from one of her bedtime story streams
there's a maaaaassive gap between the two moods and the way she talks and acts, but it's all genuine. playing yourself up for the camera doesn't make it a lie, people are nebulous and can have true, real personalities on opposite sides of a spectrum
and the camera doesn't have to literally be a camera, i feel like any time i interact with other people, i'm putting on a performance of some sort. my performance may change depending on circumstances, but it's very rare for me to be truly demasked around anybody,
and that begs the question, "who's the real me? what's my real personality like?" but i think that question is flawed. it's all you, even your lies are part of you, the way you portray yourself in different scenarios makes you who you are.
people always talk about being different when you're alone, and how that's your "true self," but i think it's just one of many images of your entire self. i don't need to show my true self to people i pass on the street. i don't need to perform as much for people im comfortable w
i guess what i'm getting at is that a "self" can't be attributed to one way of acting, one manner of speaking. your self is viewed different from all kinds of viewpoints, and all those views together form an image of who you "truly" are.
it's just anime girls bro it's not that deep
