Spiny waterfleas (Bythotrephes longimanus) have been found in each of the Great Lakes and in more than 100 inland lakes in Ontario.
These tiny invaders can have big impacts: they reduce the food supply for native fish, they get stuck to fishing equipment, making it difficult to reel in lines, and clog commercial nets.
They can easily be transported to new lakes by hitch hiking in your live-wells and bilge water. To prevent their spread in Ontario, remember to Clean, Drain, Dry your boat every time you leave the water.
