A few highlights from the UKRI public engagement team in what has been a difficult year for engagement, but also a year where research, innovation and science have been a much bigger part of everyone’s daily lives 🧵 (1/10)

It’s been a tough year for many of our partners. We’ve spent a lot of the year working with universities, museums and other partners to understand what they need to continue engaging the public with research and innovation in 2020 (2/10) https://twitter.com/STEMLearningUK/status/1255124111317221376?s=20
This is the year that engagement went digital. Our research with @TheLiminalSpace shows the many ways that museums are using digital technology to engage audiences in new ways (3/10) https://twitter.com/TheLiminalSpace/status/1324756358030393344?s=20
We’ve supported digital public dialogues through the @Sciencewise programme on issues where public perspectives are urgently needed, from carbon capture and storage to online harms (4/10) https://twitter.com/Sciencewise/status/1268100015874072581?s=20
We tracked trust in science throughout 2020, which remains high. But we know that there is gap between those who do & don’t have a degree in terms of trust & participation. Understanding what the R&I community can do to narrow the gap is a priority (5/10) https://twitter.com/UKRI_News/status/1308310730563878912?s=20
Involving diverse perspectives in the research that we fund is also a key priority for us. In 2021 UKRI/NERC is funding a project to collaborate with diverse communities across the UK to understand public priorities for research on healthy environments (6/10)
This year we launched our Citizen Science Collaboration Grants to spread citizen science methods into new fields of research and involve citizens in addressing social challenges. We'll announce funded projects in the new year [7/10] https://twitter.com/tom_saunders/status/1270350982648680449?lang=en
We’ve been thinking a lot about models of public engagement funding. Our devolved funding pilot, in partnership with the @MuseumsAssoc will support museums to test digital approaches to engagement for new and under-represented audiences [8/10] https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/museums-digital-innovation-and-engagement-fund/
To end on a personal highlight: working with a fantastic bunch of colleagues in the UKRI public engagement team, who come to work every day committed to building a research and innovation system that works for all. Look forward to seeing them all again IRL in 2021 (10/10)
