I can see why this seems odd but: available data suggests that once vaccinated, YOU are likely protected from severe COVID VERY quickly, from symptomatic COVID19 at all by the second dose , and once the second dose is done that’s likely - hopefully for a long time.

1) Still get it if you had COVID.
Natural immunity- antibody levels can drop in some people, and we don’t know the antibody level cut off for “protective”.
Reinfections possible. https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/ppih/if-ppih-covid-19-sag-reinfection-rapid-review.pdf
Vaccines CAN be better than natural immunity (eg the shingles vaccine!)

95% ish efficacy is amazing enough that if you were in the 5% you’d feel pretty dissed. But 5% vaccinated could get it and IMPORTANTLY so could everyone still waiting, while vaccine rolls out. #DistsnceHandwashMask is appropriate while that happens.
Seems polite, lifesaving.

Once our elders in congregate living and community, and (especially older) essential workers are immunized, we’ll see deaths and hospitalizations drop and health care will be less crushed. We’ll be able to be more open, hygiene measures in place. This will likely phase in.

Once you’re vaccinated (2 weeks after) in private with other vaccinated people, I think it’s fine to NOT distance etc if not having symptoms. Out and about masking seems right because other people can’t know if you’re vaccinated or a jerk. Easier to just put on the mask, no?

YOU’LL be feeling much more confident going out and you’ll ALMOST certainly be protected after vaccine.
But health care workers and scientists are a careful lot.
95% is not 100%.
We have data on >100 000 vaccine recipients and will get a LOT more. We’ll learn more...

But saying “now you’re bulletproof” is misleading, although easier that “Now we think you’re near 100% protected against severe disease but we aren’t sure if you might carry virus for a bit before clearing it if you’re exposed, and a few people might get the short straw”...

The accomplishment of vaccines for COVID19 is AMAZING!
But early days.
Overselling and oversimplifying can mislead.
We’ll figure out the uncertainties. Things may evolve as we go.
There may be curve balls- this is COVID19...
but at least right now we see the way out clearly.
