As we are marking 25 years since Gillian Rose’s passing, here’s a little known fact about her which I think might or should influence how we understand her relation to Adorno and FS Critical Theory.

After completing her DPhil on Adorno (the first doctorate, I believe, to examine his work in the UK) and publishing it as The Melancholy Science (1978), Rose made steps to have Adorno’s Noten zur Literatur translated into English as Notes on Literature, ... [2/9]
going so far as having edited the four volumes down to what she saw to be the most important essays for an Anglophone reception and having secured publishers in the UK (Macmillan) and US (Columbia UP). [3/9]
Although Adorno’s estate (presumably Margarete and Rolf Tiedemann) would ultimately reject the request – despite some promise that Macmillan were to be able to purchase the rights they would not accept anything other than the full set – ... [4/9]
Rose appeared to have worked on this between c.1977/78–80, the same time that she was preparing Hegel contra Sociology (1981). This rejection would then mean that a (complete) English edition of Noten zur Literatur would not be published, I believe, until 1991. [5/9]
Sure, sure, but why is this interesting? Well, I think it demonstrates two things. Firstly, I think it gives weight to arguments that don’t see Rose’s relation to Adorno as a straightforward rejection. It is, of course, true that she launches some strong challenges... [6/9]
against Adorno in Hegel contra Sociology and the later lecture/essay on dialectical and speculative thinking – I will leave to one side whether these criticism entirely land – it doesn’t seem entirely possible to me that she wishes to disavow her indebtedness to his work. [7/9]
Secondly, it’s surely not inconsequential that she chose to pursue editing, translating, and publishing Noten zur Literatur, say before Ästhetische Theorie (although I’m not 100% sure how long Christian Lenhardt spent on his first translation of the work). [8/9]
I haven’t fully thought this through, but I don’t think it would be an unfruitful task to return to The Melancholy Science with this in mind. [9/9]
