The annual @ILGAWORLD report on state-sponsored queerphobia is out.

28 have marriage equality.

A handful offer full protection.

And societal acceptance and legality are often far apart.

Science is international. Research is international. Students and teaching and outreach are international. That's why this should matter to scientists (aside from it's inherent discrimination, pain, suffering, and injustice)
Do field work?
Have international collabs?
Run a field course?
Have an overseas campus?
Go to conferences?

How many countries have you visited where I could be imprisoned?
And in how many of your travel risk assessments were the risks to queer (predominantly gay) travelers evaluated, and contingencies in place?

If you had to get someone in your team/class/etc out of a country because of these laws, do you know what to do?
And even if you want to dismiss the illegality argument (which you shouldn't), 70% of countries lack broad protections for LGBTQ+ folks
