A police officer slams a man's head into a police cruiser. A cop punches a Black man walking home from the mosque. Videos of police violence have gone viral. So why don’t we track all punches, kicks, and body slams used by police?

At a time of international outcry over excessive police force against racialized communities, Ontarians have an incomplete picture of the force our officers use against members of the public. Why? Because much is unreported. https://www.thestar.com/news/investigations/2020/12/16/police-punches-kicks-slaps-and-body-slams-are-going-untracked-in-ontario-thats-because-much-of-the-physical-force-officers-use-is-not-reported-and-there-are-growing-calls-for-that-to-change.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMedia&utm_campaign=GTA&utm_content=
Since 1993, police in Ontario have been required to complete a “use of force" report for when a gun is drawn or a weapon is used. But the threshold for reporting the use of physical force is “a very high bar," Sam Tecle, a Jane-Finch community leader says. https://www.thestar.com/news/investigations/2020/12/16/police-punches-kicks-slaps-and-body-slams-are-going-untracked-in-ontario-thats-because-much-of-the-physical-force-officers-use-is-not-reported-and-there-are-growing-calls-for-that-to-change.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMedia&utm_campaign=GTA&utm_content=

Aaron Keeshig, an Indigenous man, was thrown to the ground during a 2018 arrest. Even though he sought medical attention, lawyers said the physical force officers used on Keeshig would not likely have triggered a use-of-force report. https://www.thestar.com/news/investigations/2020/12/16/police-punches-kicks-slaps-and-body-slams-are-going-untracked-in-ontario-thats-because-much-of-the-physical-force-officers-use-is-not-reported-and-there-are-growing-calls-for-that-to-change.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMedia&utm_campaign=GTA&utm_content=

Keeshig and his brother Randall filed a complaint. According to an OPP spokesperson, a “thorough” probe concluded allegations of excessive force were “unsubstantiated."

Some cases that should be reported are also slipping through the cracks, the Star found. An example? Derek MacIsaac, 19, was lying face down, when a Toronto officer struck him in the back of the head with the barrel of his weapon in 2017, a judge found. https://www.thestar.com/news/investigations/2020/12/16/police-punches-kicks-slaps-and-body-slams-are-going-untracked-in-ontario-thats-because-much-of-the-physical-force-officers-use-is-not-reported-and-there-are-growing-calls-for-that-to-change.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMedia&utm_campaign=GTA&utm_content=
Police punches, kicks, slaps and body slams are going untracked in Ontario. That’s because much of the physical force officers use is not reported — and there are growing calls for that to change.
