Feels as if barely a day goes by w/out a startling and revelatory investigation from next-gen Russian media outfit. Places like @the_ins_ru @wwwproektmedia @istories_media (and reportorial side of @fbkinfo) represent a new journalistic landscape, one that's harder to suppress.
last few months serve as a new and important data point when well-meaning people ask me about state of independent journalism in Russia: it's a tough, economically complicated, and sometimes dangerous business, but at same time I feel like it's producing the best work in memory.
one more perhaps banal but important observation: Russia also reveals the limits of even the best investigative journalism. Without independent courts and a true opposition embedded inside the system, it can be impossible for such reporting to gain momentum and impact.
