Coffee lovers: I want to tell you a story about a business you must seek out.
Imagine a small shop, really just space for a counter and any remaining space is lined with shelves. On the counter is a shiny chrome coffee grinding machine and rows of jars of different coffee beans.
The beans vary, from foreign places to flavours. Which you’ll be bewildering, except the shop staff will take the time to pick up each jar and waft the contents so you can smell each jar and find the one for you.
Once you’ve made your decision, they’ll grind the bean to fit your coffee machine/ cafetière/device of choice. The coffee bags are bronze foil with a little handwritten label on them- this design hasn’t changed for years.
The scent of your coffee comes out when the bean is ground and is magnificent as it fills the shop and beyond.
While you wait, the things in the shelves will catch your eye: sugar mice, marron glaces, marzipan fruits, chocolate truffles.
The best thing about this shop is that you can take all the time in the world to choose- there is never a rush expected- at least not by the customer.
I should add it has a wall of teas as well.
If you want to find this shop, it is called Mecca, and exists in west Wales, in Aberystwyth, Chalybeate St.
Look for the little shop front (or just follow your nose to the coffee!).
(They also do phone orders)
