What happens when regional languages are allowed to thrive in a province? Let's look at Sindhi, a language that is widely applied in curriculum and scholarly level in the province.
The assumption is that people are not able to learn other languages, such as Urdu and English. The assumption is that they struggle with it. Absolutely wrong.
Both of my parents completed their education in Sindhi medium schools. They properly used English only when they were in university. Today my father can draft emails in fluent English, his Urdu is more fluent than many Urdu speakers. He even speaks fluent Punjabi.
Sindhi trickles down easily to the illiterate population, they are able to memorize folk stories, poetry and are even able to do everyday mathematics. Just because Sindhi has that kind of influence.
Sindhi has many local printing presses, Sindhi newspapers are everywhere. The literature is alive and thriving, it develops organically. People have an organic relationship with the language.
While being able to sustain this organic relationship, people are also able to speak Urdu. Even those who have never learnt this language in school. Because ultimately it is the language of communication and media.
So I doubt there's anything to be insecure about...the source of insecurity for Urdu speakers comes from the fact that despite it being a national language; it has lost an organic relationship with its speakers.
The point of saying all this is that there's value in keeping regional languages alive, these languages are more relatable to their speakers. This relatability reflects in their everyday references, their humour, their colloquialisms.
And a human brain is capable of speaking multiple languages without necessarily losing one or the other. But that depends on your relationship with a language, and it can never be forced.
