Excited that the comic of the research we conducted on park-people relations around #Virunga park, w.S.Batundi, J.Murairi, @esthermarijnen & E.Mahamba is now online @CPAID_LSE! It features the difficult struggle for livelihoods of farmers & their families https://www.lse.ac.uk/africa/centre-for-public-authority-and-international-development/Comics/Conservation-and-livelihoods
People living around Virunga face stark challenges to make ends meet, and this may contribute to them entering the park to exploit resources, which is often facilitated by armed actors
When those entering the park are caught and apprehended, their families may be pushed further into poverty. Donors supporting law enforcement around the park should take these livelihoods effects into account!
Protecting the park while at the same time ensuring the safety and livelihoods of the population is no easy task, but we could start by listening to those living next to the park themselves!
