The Seminole War ,which was a 42 year gureilla campaign against the U.S., included not only Native Americans but escaped slaves from South Carolina. Because America needs to maintain the narrative that black people have never and should never use violence against oppression.
The Black Seminoles were Gullah who escaped from plantations in Georgia and South Carolina. They went to Spanish Florida and set up free settlements alongside The Native American tribes. Both groups viewing their common enemy as the British Colonies to the North.
These Native American and African American societies over the 18th century merged more and more. Trading cultures and intermarrying. Even being given their autonomy in the Everglades by the Spanish if they promised to protect Florida from the British.
Alright so let's fast forward a bit. America becomes independent and is, unsurprisingly, scared of what they deem as a "threat" in the Seminoles. That slaves in the U.S. might start running away to join them and being that slave labor was so important they needed a solution.
So what did they do? Well what America always does when a marginalized group starts to empower themselves, nip that shit in the bud. The Nazis didn't design themselves on the U.S. for nothing. And luckily for James Monroe he had a professional sociopath named Gen. Andrew Jackson
So he invades Florida claiming it for the U.S. and executing those who opposed him. When he became President part of his Indian Removal included breaking up Seminole settlements. But the Seminoles weren't pussy at all, rising up and starting the Seminole War which cost the US big
This became the largest slave rebellion in history and the U.S. was completely unprepared for the smoke that was coming their way. Destroying valuable sugar plantations all across Florida and murdering slave masters. It was so intense the U.S. agreed to a temporary treatise.
First moving to Native American land in Oklahoma in 1848 where they realized the U.S. wasn't going to accept their sovereignty. Seminole leaders packed up their people and fled again to Mexico where slavery was illegal. They gained Mexican land and killed U.S. slave catchers
Due to the combined resistance of the Seminoles and Mexican Army the U.S. gave up and the Seminole War was over. Seminole culture survives to this day. History books preach the efficacy of "peaceful protests" but we all know the only language the state understands is violence.
Yes there was MLKs peaceful marches and then there were the riots after his death. Every major city was on fire for four days and four nights on some biblical shit and the government decided "Hey maybe Civil Rights isn't such a bad idea after all"
