how u shouldn’t be treated at the nail salon: A THREAD
FIRST OFF: EMA vs MMA
MMA is ILLEGAL for the use of artificial nails, MMA is dental acrylic for crowns or even dentures so obviously it’s meant to be STRONG. MMA can permanently damage your nails & the surrounding skin. MMA is commonly used in Chop Shops & some nail supply (1/?)
stores will sell it in unmarked bottles! The smell of MMA is usually much stronger than EMA & to find out if the salon is using MMA on you, you can soak your nails in 100% acetone, EMA (proper liquid monomer for nails) will FLAKE, MMA gets gooey and is EXTREMELY hard to soak off
since MMA is so strong, your nails can last much longer, BUT if you happen to break a nail, your natural nail will most likely split along with the artificial nail and in some severe cases, your entire natural nail can come off with the artificial nail!!!

TW: BLOOD & GORE

this woman got her nails done at a shop that used MMA, fell down and tried to catch herself with her hands, and instead of her acrylic nail just breaking, THE TIP OF HER FINGER POPPED OFF. HER FINGERRRRRR!!!
while this is a very severe case, most it’s not uncommon for people to experience itching/burning sensations around the nails surrounding skin, and nails detaching from the nail bed. some people can also experience extreme allergic reactions (this has happened to me)
nail damage isn’t only caused by the use of improper chemicals & products. You can do everything correctly and still have a client lose a nail. this usually happens if a client has fresh nails or nails that are pretty long. i see this most with very
thin natural nails + long nails + an accident (hitting it/slamming it, falling, fighting, etc) this can cause detachment of the natural nail from the nail bed, which is why it’s SOOOOO important to not remove layers of your natural nail!!
RING OF FIRE:
this happens when layers of the natural nail are removed & can be clearly seen on the nail plate, IF YOU ARE GETTING A PROPER SOAK OFF & YOU HAVE THESE RINGS, THE TECHNICIAN IS REMOVING TOO MANY LAYERS OF THE NAIL PLATE
you can also get these rings from pulling your nails off or having someone pop them off at a salon. IF YOU ARE PAYING TO HAVE YOUR NAILS REMOVED & THEY TRY TO POP IT OFF WITH ANOTHER NAIL TIP, STOP THEM. YOU ARE PAYING FOR YOUR NAILS TO BE SOAKED OFF NOT RIPPED OFF.
proof is in the pudding, look at how healthy i had my clients nails (dusty from soak off and prepping for a new set) & then the one time she cheated they destroyed her natural nails.
i’m not sure how nail salons are operating now because of COVID but please please please make sure they’re using BRAND NEW nail files & buffers on you. i can’t even count how many times i used to get cut by a nail file at the salon so imagine them using that same file on multiple
clients!!! EW. if they’re not pulling they’re tools out of a sanitizer bag, look around and make sure use a barbicide jar nearby, ITS SO SO SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE CLEAN TOOLS USED ON YOU. you can even purchase your own nail files/nail implements & bring them to your service to
*their & *you see (thinking faster than i can type) make sure that clean tools are being used on you. also, pls don’t get dip nails if they’re dipping your nails straight into the jar, so so so unsanitary especially if someone has wounds on their fingers.
If you’re getting a pedicure and they’re not using bags in the bowl, pls stop going there. also request or ask if they cleaned the bowl before you put your feet in, there’s been too many times i’ve cleaned a pedi bowl that had nail clippings & skin in the jet due to other ppls
laziness. ppl get foot fungus & infections from unsanitary pedicures all the time, don’t be afraid to ask them to clean! also in most states it’s illegal for a nail technician to remove ingrown toe nails & usually causes more harm than good, if theyre hurting u, stop the service.
that’s all i’ve got for now! i hope this information helps you out for the next time you get your nails done! not here to scare yall just inform!! find you a nail tech that loves & cares about YOU & YOUR NAILS not just the money!! if i think of more i’ll add to the thread!
