Good, pithy piece from Angela Nagle at @thelampmagazine on the questionable drive to abolish the family. What’s striking about this idea is how ignorant it is about attachment, which is well-studied across many species including humans https://thelampmagazine.com/2020/12/15/products-of-gestational-labor/
Parents and young of many species including humans form an attachment bond to facilitate caretaking. It’s an adaptive, evolved behaviour and no amount of radical agitation is going to make those countless years’ evolution disappear overnight. http://labs.psychology.illinois.edu/~rcfraley/attachment.htm
They might also reflect on the swathes of solidly left wing practice across eg psychotherapy, social work or education that look at attachment studies to inform compassionate treatment of traumatised or looked after children https://www.attachmentleadnetwork.net/what-is-an-attachment-aware-school.php
They might also consider how, if attachment is evolved, not learned, a politicised effort to abolish it will produce not flourishing in freedom but broken, unhappy children & adults acting out in chaos. That looks like freedom for predators and misery for everyone else. No thanks
Anyone looking for a solid intro to the topic of attachment may enjoy Sue Gerhardt’s excellent Why Love Matters. Strong carer/infant bonds are foundational to human psychological health. Campaigning to abolish this this is not just daft, it’s evil https://www.routledge.com/Why-Love-Matters-How-affection-shapes-a-babys-brain/Gerhardt/p/book/9780415870535
