WHY TENET IS A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE.
WRITER/DIRECTOR: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN
[A THREAD]
Tenet is a story about friendship across time and ones identity. First thing first, Kat's son (Max) is Neil is a theory that the film supports heavily.
The film ends with the protagonist looking over Kat and her son and it shows that he will look out for them just like Neil looked out for him throughout the film. Neil knows what drink he likes, he knows him as a person, for Neil this friendship is ending...
...and for Protagonist it's beginning. Another thing is Kat. The protagonist is in a type of situation due to the nature of his job he can't share much of his life with anyone not even a name because it puts him and his mission at risk.
When he first sees Kat he sees that she can't share her pain with anyone too. They relate on that sense. But tenet doesn't let the protagonist off the hook that easy. Any relationship with her and he will comprise his mission etc.
That's why the film ends with him looking over mother and son but not actually being with them. And again coming back for Neil, Neil saved protagonist in the opening opera and in the end by opening the door and taking the bullet.
I love the message of the film. The last frame of the film is the protagonist watching over Kat and Max from a distance. He can’t get in their lives because it’s dangerous for Kat. These people like Neil and The Protagonist will save the world and no one will ever know they exist
They have no life outside of this. They get no closure other than last Neil and Protagonist scene. It’s also part of the reason why we don’t get to know the name of the Protagonist cuz his name doesn’t matter. His life doesn’t give him closure.
Reasons why Neil is Kats son (Max)
1. If you take Max’s full name and invert the last 4 words you get Neil.
2. Neils theme is the inverse of Kats theme.
3. Neil seems to know a lotttt about Kat. She didn’t know when she had that fight with her husband Sator but Neil remembered the exact time and date.
4. Robert Pattinson only dyed his hair blonde in this film just to match Max’s hair
5. One of the first things he asks the Protagonist is that “Would you ever take a child hostage? A woman?”
6. At the end Neil asks the protagonist if he's gonna go back and watch over Kat and the protagonist looks somewhat shocked and hesitantly says no and then Neil once again asks "not even from afar?"...
... and the protagonist looks shocked again and says no and then that's exactly what he does, maybe the protagonist realizes Neil is her son because of that as well.
At the end of the day, the Protagonist will just be a ghost who saves the world but the world never knows about it. This is shown again when he saves Kat and Kat has no idea about it. In the script its written as if Kat looks at the phone like a strange thing, like its gonna do..
..nothing. That’s the tragedy. It’s the reason why the film ends with that voice over from Neil basically saying we are heroes without medals.
