Recently @sciam published a promotional (instead of journalistic) article promoting the idea that functional neurological disorder (FND) is a legitimate neurological illness instead of repackaged hysteria. 1/ https://twitter.com/DianaMKwon/status/1319210146380341254
Many physicians have denied what we experienced patients, particularly women, know to be the truth: FND is the newest hysteria term they are pushing very hard to sound like something “new.” Recently this discussion was discovered on Reddit that proves what we knew all along. 2/
FND is a wastebasket drs use to fool patients into thinking they’re being taken seriously when in they actually want to punt them on mental health for their own convenience. They do not give a crap about your well-being. @DianeOLeary has discovered this in medical literature. 3/
Of a dr says you have FND remove yourself from their care immediately and make sure the term is scrubbed from your records. Twitter tips for #patients: beware of any accounts with “FND” as the first letters of their handle, also be wary of any “patients” with FND who just 4/
“happen” to be PhDs in neurology-related subjects to “treat” FND. Other things to look out for: low-follower accounts claiming to be FND patients that ONLY interact with each other when they “comfort” each other because they are being “bullied” by people who scientifically 5/
critique FND. These are likely accounts run by practitioners whose careers are invested in FND or forms of renamed psychosomatic illness. Also beware of appropriating common language from patient communities and applying it to FND. FND is a dr-led, not patient-led, movement. 6/
