It's basically the promise and premise of every hacker movie from the 90s where during the day you're a fucking loser with a shit job but become a cool action hero/cyber savior once you get on the computer by night, except to them it's 100% absolutely what is happening and real

I wonder if, if it somehow survives, a century or so from now they'll be identifiable as a distinct cultural group separate from all others, a sort of weird folk mysticism syncretic religion like the Alevis in Turkey, Ahmadis in Pakistan, Parsis in India or Yazidis among Kurds
