A lot — and I mean virtually almost everything — about working in journalism is telling stories about some tragedy or something depressing or someone doing something corrupt and evil.

It can weigh on a person. But, believe it or not, I never think it is all for naught. https://twitter.com/wvpublicnews/status/1339002354293739527
Reporting the news is about letting people know what's going on and helping them make informed decisions about their lives and the lives of others.

It's about making progress. Not some political kind, but the human kind.
It's been a hell of a long nine-plus months.

I know I don't need to tell you any of that. You know. You've lived it.
But, today and for the first time in a very long time, I got to go report on a story that gave me some damn hope for this planet, this nation, this state and — admittedly selfishly and most importantly — my community and the people I care about.
I feel a deep privilege to get to do what I do for a living. As David Carr said, journalism is a "great caper."

I felt a great privilege being able to be in the room today as vaccines started being administered to critical frontline workers at Ruby Memorial in Morgantown.
I also must say I am glad to have had Aaron Jay Shackelford ( @shackevs) drop some other stuff in life and pivot to work with me on a short video piece that is to come.
I hope you read this story. I hope you listen to it. And I hope you find some hope in it out of what's been one hellacious ride this year.

I know this pandemic is certainly not over. Wear a mask, wash your hands and continue to be safe.

Hang in there.
As a person who makes a living on all the dark, bad shit in the world — I can tell you I saw a little bit of the light today. And it is good.
