My mom has cirrhosis, which is a liver condition, but every time she went to a doctor for care, they implied that her cirrhosis was alcohol-related, when she literally never drinks. She told me they were always accusatory and racist towards her.
She recently had a biopsy and they discovered that her cirrhosis is auto-immune, confirming that it's not alcohol-related at all. And I'm so frustrated that it took years for us to receive this confirmation.
Today, she is finally on medication for her cirrhosis.
And to be clear, Black people who drink don’t deserve shame from doctors when they have cirrhosis, either.
The autoimmune hepatitis that caused her cirrhosis worsens over time when not treated & can eventually lead to liver failure. Taking so long to diagnosis + treat it is violent. Also, it's hereditary. https://liverfoundation.org/for-patients/about-the-liver/diseases-of-the-liver/autoimmune-hepatitis/
On a lighter note (kinda): I'm gonna hear about how autoimmune hepatitis runs in our family every time I drink for the rest of my life.

To clarify: alcoholic hepatitis, which you treat by abstaining from drinking, & autoimmune hepatitis, which is treated through immunosuppressive medication, both cause cirrhosis & they assumed she had the alcohol one even though she told them that was impossible.
