Associate incentives...lots blame the billable hour for some behaviours...but don’t think associates think about hours + bonuses day in day out. What really gets them going is praise from others - particularly from partners. This incentive easily can lead to self-destruction
Partners always come back to “improving the client experience” esp when talking about innovation and tech. I don’t completely know what this means tbh. I think it is something around wowing clients with things...
That jars with me a bit because it naturally prioritises new shiny things clients play with directly, rather than the operational things under the hood that nobody sees but greatly improve how lawyers work
But I do wonder whether you can use a partner’s desire to “please” a client with something, and the associate’s parasitic desire to please a partner (and others) to create change...need to think about ways you can wire both of these things into change initiatives
Or maybe it’s just a very long winded way of saying “change starts from the top”...but I suppose providing a bit of structure to that does no harm. To be considered alongside “innovation hours” targets etc.
