Short thread: In Sunday's game against the Blazers, the Kings brought out a soccer-style 1-2-2 full court press that appears to be triggered right after a King shoots free throws.
Basically, in varying degrees of aggressiveness, the 1-2-2 press uses three players at the top to harass the opponent's ballhandlers, and two players in the back to either apply more pressure or drop back to protect the rim
The ideal is to catch the opponent off-guard and create open-court turnovers. Here, Justin James does a good job getting his hands in the passing lane and Haliburton gets an easy dunk
But another added benefit is to change the pace of the defense and force the opponent's offense into doing something they are uncomfortable with. The press here baits the Blazers into posting up Enes Kanter against Metu,
And again here the Blazers look like they don't know what they want to run, starting with a DJJ iso and ending in a wild look for Covington (s/o to Haliburton here cutting off the swing pass from Covington, funneling Covington into the paint where the help is set)
The drawback to the press is that it takes a ton of energy to run consistently and dedication from all five defenders. Here Fox looks ready to press, but Barnes is not in the right position to press, and McCollum beats him baseline
Sum up: Watch for when the Kings shoot free throws. They will often set up a full-court press to bother the opponent.
