Okay, here we go. Not specifying exact number in case I suddenly realise 1 or more I forgot, but 15+ YA books available in UK bookshops (mostly #UKYA authors but not all) that I've read and loved this year, along with recs of who they'd be great presents for.
They're in no order, and I'm only including ones I've read myself. Will potentially do a second thread tomorrow with other books I've heard amazing things about but not got to yet. (It's been a WEIRD reading year, for various reasons.)
Dangerous Remedy by Kat Dunn - An absolute favourite of mine ever since I first beta-read it, this French Revolution-set fantasy is a perfect read for fans of found family, whip-smart dialogue, and awesome queer pairings.
Hold Back The Tide by Melinda Salisbury - one of the most immediately gripping openings in ages leads to an outstanding story with a jaw-dropping ending. If you have a teen you want to keep quiet, this will engross them then leave them speechless for days.
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo - the most poetic YA writer I've ever read returns with a wonderful verse novel about two sisters, in different countries, left fatherless. For teens who love beautiful writing and stories about families.
Every Little Piece Of My Heart by Non Pratt - my favourite UKYA contemporary author's best book yet, perhaps. Perfect present for fans of brilliantly realistic characters, outstanding dialogue, and changing friendships.
The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones by Daven McQueen - a historical tearjerker, and one of my absolute favourite books of the year. Don't miss this as a gift for readers who love reading about life in Fifties America, wonderful friendships, small towns, and emotional reads.
Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis - super-creepy story which had me sleeping with the lights on! Buy for teens who don't scare easily, especially if they love weird small-town settings, gripping narrators and stunning endings.
Run, Rebel by Manjeet Mann - stunning verse novel about a British Indian teen rebelling against her abusive father. Perfect gift for fans of great heroines, sparse writing styles and beautiful supportive relationships between female family members.
Break The Fall by Jennifer Iacopelli - the most gripping sports novel I can ever remember reading. For everyone, regardless of their familiarity with gymnastics, who wants to read a staggeringly great book about teens standing side by side against abuse.
A Throne Of Swans by Katharine and Elizabeth Corr - epic fantasy novel with a wonderful cast of characters. Buy this for teens who love great world-building, and stories of love, betrayal and heroism.
10 Things I Hate About Pinky by Sandhya Menon - hilarious rom-com. If your teen loves fake dating, an MC who wear the SJW badge with pride, rule-followers finding the joy in seeing different ways to do things, and incredibly cute opossums, this will be a hit!
Blood Moon by Lucy Cuthew - another fabulous verse novel. For anyone who loves books about science, complicated friendships, people taking a stand against online shaming, and brilliantly supportive parents, this is a great present.
