Spare a thought for writers, who have to watch this storm of capitalism happening in fandom and yet remain largely unable to participate in or profit from it https://twitter.com/GloriousScumbag/status/1338931086961741824
Sometimes writers are able to collect massive followings (as long as they write Correctly, which is a whole other thread and speaks to OP's concerns about no weird shit) but there is the same emphasis on production of content for consumption rather than community
And yet, there is no broad community acceptance of fan writers being able to sell their books in the same way that, say, jp writers can sometimes turn a profit with short novels
A lot of artists don't make back their money they invest on MOQs or their time they lost drawing for an unprofitable zine

but most of the time, writers aren't given the chance to participate

every page a writer puts in a physical zine reduces profitability
there's an entire conversation that amateur writers have about "writing for yourself" and being satisfied with no comments, no feedback, loving it just for ~*The Craft*~ and it's so far away from the cottage industry that fanartists can participate in that it's hard to believe
I feel really fortunate that I've been able to have my writing in two physical zines, but that's not the norm at all, and even writers with large followings hit a wall in terms of getting financial compensation for their work
Also for the truly stupid/optimistic, there is not really a great way (that I have found) to make a jump from fan-writing to original writing

whereas once an artist reaches a certain critical mass of followers, they can introduce their own comics and OCs and keep building
